Cynthia LAM – HSBC

“I have joined the Student Co-op Student Trainee Program in HSBC for 6 months. I worked in the Global Standards team under the Retail Banking and Wealth Management department. My team mainly focuses on the CDD a related issue which is basically operational works related to compliance and to analyze our clients’ credits.

Being in this team, has offered me with a great opportunity to get to know more about the bank’s internal regulations and standards when they are analyzing a customer profile. Also, I did get a taste of how to modify the current data storage system with the help from the IT department and to design a new model together with a business requirement proposal to the global team.

This internship experience has further straightened my communication, data analysis, interpersonal and presentation skills. HSBC, as one of the biggest banking group in Hong Kong, it will always be a pleasure to students like us to join and be the first stepping stone to embark our future career. Colleagues there are always willing to help you out, both the team spirit and the working environment are encouraging.

HSBC does appreciate work life balance, which it has senior management teams to hold town hall from time to time and spread the message that employees are not encouraged to working overtime and to send work emails after office hours. Moreover, it provides monthly budgets to teams for team building use which allows its employees to have a better bonding with their colleagues and the company as a whole.

I strongly believe that this internship opportunity would be a valuable one for students who would like to get a taste of the banking industry.”
