Words from Co-Directors

Welcome to GLEF.

Our Global Economics and Finance Program (GLEF) is truly unique among undergraduate programs in Hong Kong. It is a relatively new program that started in 2012, on strong endorsement from the University. The program is jointly offered by the Department of Economics and the Department of Finance, thus it is a program that belongs to both the Faculty of Social Science and the Business School. Students in this program have access to a wide range of resources provided by the two departments and the two Faculties. Examples are exchange and internship opportunities, scholarships, and computing and trading lab facilities.

GLEF welcomes students from all over the world. Students come from three backgrounds. First, half of our students are local students joining our program on the strength of HKDSE results. Second, a significant proportion of students are graduates from high schools in the UK, US, Taiwan, South Korea, mainland China and other Asian countries. Third, we have students who are Hong Kong residents joining our program on the strength of GCE and IB results.  To cater for diverse student background, English is used in all classes and activities.

It is our objective to keep a high admission standard and a small intake size. Admission scores of our students have been ranked consistently among the top ten programs of CUHK. To gain admission, every student must attend one or more interviews with the Co-Directors, either in person or through video-conferencing.

This major program requires students to complete 22 courses. These courses are either specially designed for GLEF or are existing courses offered by Department of Economics and Department of Finance. Students will gain knowledge on specialized topics as well as concepts in Economics and operational skills in Finance.

There is a capstone course requirement in the final year. Students have to either complete a practicum at an outside organization, or complete a substantial research project.

GLEF students are enthusiastic in joining exchange programs and internship programs. Almost all of them have participated/ will participate in exchange for studying in a foreign university for one term or more, although participating in exchange is not a requirement of the program. Internship opportunities in terms of placement or invitation-to-apply are always available.

We regularly organize career-related workshops for voluntary participation by students. Examples are workshops on job hunting, Excel Virtual Basic for Applications (VBA), and Equity Pricing Modeling.

Last but not least, students enjoy a vibrant and collegiate social/ learning environment. Thanks to the student society, GEFS, mutual support among students has been fostered by regular social gatherings and career-related activities that are organized by students.

GLEF is your road to four years of challenging and rewarding training in a supportive family setting. It is also your first step into the fascinating world of global finance.
