Helen CHAN – Nomura International

“During the summer time in 2018, I joined Nomura International (Hong Kong) Limited as their Summer Intern Analyst in Operations. I was assigned to Shared Services team throughout the ten-week internship and had parallel rotation between Know-Your-Client (KYC) and OTC / Security Settlement. The major job duties were to assist risk assessment of client companies and generate settlements reconciliation reports, so as to allow smooth transaction flows between the bank and its counterparties.

Working in a fast-paced investment bank was challenging, but yet it enhanced my on-the-ground understandings in the transaction supporting functions and potential challenges that might face as the middle office of a typical bank. Moreover, I was also glad to be given the opportunity to work on 2 internship projects about innovation initiatives in Operations. This is where I can explore new development trends in working process automation and interactive performance dashboard among the banking industry. In general, such internship program has enriched my technical knowledge in running daily trading transactions in investment bank as well as my exposure in its new technological development initiatives.

More importantly, I gained essential soft skills from the internship, which is highly valuable in workplace environment. For instance, MBTI personality workshop, networking and presentation skills training and volunteering activities were arranged by the company during office hours. These training sessions have greatly sharpened my interpersonal skills, such that I can collaborate with my colleagues and demonstrate ideas to clients efficiently.

Afterall, I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards Nomura for the effort and trust placed in guiding me through the practical operations in an investment bank. I am also thankful to GLEF in building my general background knowledge of financial markets and all the assistance provided for securing my internship offer. I believe such precious internship experience would benefit my lifelong career development in the future.”
