Akarsh BHUTANI – Maastricht University, The Netherlands

‘At first, it was a difficult decision to make to go on a year-long exchange. However, after the exchange period ended, I was proud to say that it was one of the best decisions I made as a CUHK student.

I believer joy of life comes from our encounter with new and unique experiences. As was the case during my time spent in the Netherlands. From biking for my classes on a daily basis to enjoying the beauty of being in small town of Maastricht, it was a wholesome experience. The teaching method that prevailed at my host university was much different than CUHK, because we mainly used to have tutorials in groups of 12-14 people and few lectures on rare occasions. This helped me to broaden my horizons and become more interculturally competent after studying in classroom where no more than 2-3 students belonged to the same country.

The best part about going on exchange was travel, I managed to see 16 countries over the period of 9 months. Together with the friendships and bonds that developed throughout this journey of 9 months will be cherished for the rest of my life.’
